Marine ecosystems are changing and it is essential that we develop the knowledge necessary to learn how to live with, and adapt to these changes.
MEECE is an EU FP7 project that has investigated the sensitivities and potential responses of marine ecosystems to both climatic change and the
direct effects of human activity. By investigating the key drivers of change set by the European Union’s marine strategy (changes in temperature, ocean circulation, stratification and acidification, consequences of pollution, overfishing, invasive species and eutrophication) the project has progress our knowledge of the direct and interactive effects of these factors on marine ecosystems.
MEECE has developed a range of strategies and tools to help support and formalize the process of decision-making.
MEECE uses predictive models to explore the impacts of both climate drivers (acidification, light, circulation and temperature) and human induced drivers (fishing, pollution, invasive species and eutrophication) on marine ecosystems.
The drivers explored during the project have been considered from a management and policy perspective, and a number of tools and frameworks have been developed to help address questions relevant to management objectives.
